Gary Cheever
Head Coach Water Polo and Assistant Swim Coach
Troy High School is proud to announce the addition of Coach Gary Cheever to its esteemed coaching staff. Bringing over 14 years of coaching experience to the Boys and Girls Water Polo teams, Coach Cheevers is set to play a pivotal role as Head Coach for Troy's Water Polo teams. Together with Head Coach Summer Driessen, the duo is on a course to elevate the Warriors' aquatics program.
Coach Cheever's journey in aquatics began during his high school years at Chino, CA, where he discovered a deep-seated passion for swimming and water polo. This passion has been the driving force behind his coaching career, which took off as an Assistant Coach at Don Lugo High School, where he had previously been a student-athlete. Quickly ascending to the role of Head Coach for both boys and girls water polo teams, Coach Cheever led the teams to multiple league championships and CIF-Finals qualifications.
His coaching influence expanded to Claremont High School, where Cheever served as the Head Coach for Girls Water Polo and Swimming. Under his expert guidance, the teams achieved remarkable success, including CIF Division 2 appearances in 2022 and 2023, CIF Quarterfinals in 2020 (Division 3), and CIF Semifinals in 2018 (Division 4) and 2019 (Division 3). Coach Cheever secured Palomares League Championships in 2018 and 2019, along with a Boys’ Swimming League Championship in 2022.
Coach Cheever's impact extends beyond high school programs. He played a crucial role in Fullerton College's Women's Water Polo team's journey to a state championship in 2019. At Diamond Bar High School, he served as the Head Coach for Boys Water Polo, achieving notable accolades, including a CIF D3 Quarterfinalist finish in 2021.
His coaching journey also includes stints at CHAWP (Club for High-Performance Water Polo), contributing to the team's success at the Junior Olympics 18u Gold Division. Coach Cheever has consistently demonstrated dedication and leadership, earning the loyalty and respect of his student-athletes. This commitment to their development is evident in their achievements, with athletes committing to prestigious universities such as Stanford University.
Beyond the pool, Coach Cheevers is an avid sports enthusiast, enjoying Miami Heat basketball games and being a Dallas Cowboys fan. His well-rounded coaching approach and wealth of experience make him an invaluable asset to the Troy High School aquatics program, promising a season of growth, skill development, and team success under his guidance.
